Adult B_nai Mitzvah Class Description – 2025
Tempe Solel will begin a new two-year cycle of the Adult B’nai Mitzvah program in October 2 nd 2025, with the B’nai Mitzvah schedule in late May or early June 2027. The cohort will learn together for 1 to 2 hours, one evening a week (usually on Wednesdays). Meetings are held both at the Temple and via Zoom.
The program covers two tracks – Hebrew and Judaica (Jewish Literacy). The Hebrew track focuses on reading and decoding the Hebrew in our Siddur (Prayer Book). The Hebrew track will focus on the Reform Movement’s Liturgy for Shabbat.
The Judaica track focus is on Jewish Literacy. Jewish Literacy encompasses topics related to Jewish history, culture, traditions, and texts. Judaica sessions variously discuss the Torah (the first five books of the Bible), as well as, the other 19 Books of the Bible, Jewish holidays and festivals, Jewish ethics and values, Jewish philosophies and theologies, Zionism, and the Jewish diaspora. The Judaica track will explore Jewish identity, practices, and beliefs. Sessions will also explore key sources of Jewish texts, such as the Talmud, Midrash, and classical writings from antiquity to modern times, including contemporary Jewish issues.
Both tracks, Hebrew and Judaica, are intended to provide a foundation in Prayer Book Hebrew skills and Jewish Literacy, culminating in the cohort being called to the Torah during Shabbat morning services in May or June of 2027.
